Microsoft Access
As part of Microsoft's Office Suite of applications it is probably one of the most widely known but certainly the most under utilised.

Its association with the storage of names and addresses - customers, suppliers, for example is commonly understood but if this were its only use then it could not deserve its accolade of being the most powerful.

The reason Access is so under utilised is because to make it perform is difficult.  Once its power is harnessed however, Access is capable of existing as a key component at the very heart of virtually any business.

So what could Access be doing for you?  Specifically it is impossible to say because Access is capable of such a wide spectrum of tasks.  The result of a carefully built Access application is speed, efficiency, economy and profit.  The surprising thing about Access is that whilst skill, knowledge and experience are required in order to build an application, the end user needs to know nothing about what is going on under the bonnet in order to achieve maximum speed!

For those who have Access and are not using it, a business advantage is surely being missed.

For those who have Access and are frustrated with the result, careful further development will bring certain satisfaction.

How Access Services works:

  • We meet to discuss and explore the project outline
  • If an Access solution is recommended, a prototype application is built to demonstrate the potential
  • Only when the prototype is approved by the client is there any financial commitment to the project
  • The application is developed, the client being involved at every stage
  • Once complete, staff are trained in its use and the system goes live
  • Two to four weeks after installation, final tweaking and adjustments are carried out
  • The application, unless otherwise requested, is not program protected which means that once handed over, the client may make alterations himself if he so wishes

Some examples of business types and the databases they use:

Car distributor Customer details and activity records
Chiropodist Client appointment and treatment records

How much does it cost?
Well, as you would expect - it depends.  But as a guide, a full bespoke application would cost around £1,500 to £2,000.  More if the database is unusually complex, a lot less if you simply require some tweaking.
